We spent sixteen years building software to order for businesses that could not find anything that fit. The work was good and the outcomes were often excellent, but the model had two problems no amount of design could get around.

The first is cost and time. A build that genuinely fits a business is six figures and the better part of a year, which puts it out of reach of exactly the businesses that need it most, the ten to two hundred person operations where the owner is still the one holding it together.

The second is what happens afterwards. Custom software ages badly when there is nobody maintaining the foundation underneath it. Businesses change; a system built once and walked away from becomes the next thing people work around.
